Jo Caust Arts was established in 2011 to capitalise on the extensive experience of Dr Josephine Caust who has worked exclusively in the arts sector since 1972. We provide specialist services in areas where Dr Caust has personal expertise.

Our point of difference is that we understand and have experience in how art is practised and managed in different cultural environments and in an increasingly global world.

Our Clients include federal and state governments, universities, arts and cultural organisations, and various festivals. We have a strong client base in Asia.

Recent Highlights

Jo asia book Books: Dr Caust has recently published two international collections of case studies in arts leadership. These books have contributions from arts leaders in more than twenty countries.

Award: We were a finalist in the 2013 Australian Government awards for collaboration with Asia for our "income generation in the arts" project in Vietnam.

Dr Josephine Caust

Dr Caust holds a Bachelor of Arts in drama from Flinders University South Australia, a Graduate Diploma in Arts Administration from City University London, a Master of Arts in Communication Studies from the University of South Australia, and a PhD in Arts Leadership from the University of South Australia.

Jo web portrait Dr Caust began her career as a freelance actor in mainstream theatre, film and TV in Australia and in the UK. As a writer and manager/director in both countries she led community, youth and touring groups where the main focus was on social issues.

In 1982 Dr Caust directed the Women and Arts Festival in New South Wales, Australia with over 2000 events throughout the state.

Dr Caust then joined the Australia Council as Deputy Director of the Theatre Board. She later became Deputy CEO of the South Australian Department of Arts and was Director of Arts Development.

In the not for profit sector Dr Caust held the position of Program Director at Arts Access Society in Melbourne where she organised arts programs for disabled and disadvantaged people.

In 1995 Dr Caust began her own consultancy business, Jo Caust and Associates, supporting government, arts organizations and arts projects, and developing curricula for arts training programs in Australia and Asia.

As an academic from 1997 to 2011 Associate Professor Caust led the post-graduate program in Arts and Cultural Management at the University of South Australia. She initiated the on-line delivery of the Graduate Diploma in Management (Arts) and developed it to be the largest in the Asia-Pacific region. During this time she published more than 50 papers and articles worldwide. She also established and edited the Asia Pacific Journal of Arts and Cultural Management.

Dr Caust is an acknowledged manager and leader, and has been a member of several boards in the arts, including the South Australian Arts Industry Council, the South Australian Film Corporation and the International Association of Art Administration Educators (AAAE)

Associate Professor Caust still maintains her academic standing and research credentials as a Principal Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She continues to publish in learned journals and write articles for the media.
